Tiny Steps Forward [Daily Love Letter 9]

Beloved, When we decide to choose the way of love we could easily get distracted looking for the next giant humanitarian act to throw ourselves into. When that’s our goal then we end up disappointed and defeated most days. Small acts of love and tiny movements toward growing in lovingkindness are all just as important. We often see our lives as a movie and expect to go through changes through significant traumas or celebrations. And sometimes we do, but the most of our growth actually occurs through tiny movements each day. These movements aren’t noticeable as they occur. You may…

IT’S 2018! WE’RE BACK! [Daily Love Letter 8]

Beloved, Yes, we’re back! In case you forgot you signed up for the daily love letter that hasn’t been so daily. I know. This is all still in the experimental stage. Thank you for your patience. We’re going to be more consistent in 2018! Let me reiterate my purpose with these. I want to give you a little boost of inspiration each day to choose the way of love. More than ever we need a revolution of people choosing the way of love every day. It’’s too easy to give up hope and become cynical. It’s easy to match hate…

Love Doesn’t Exist [Daily Love Letter 7]

Beloved, Technically love doesn’t exist. For something to exist it must be seen and grasped. When added to a list of 10 items you would then have 11 items. But love doesn’t work like that. Love doesn’t exist, but rather it brings all things into existence. We cannot see love, but love allows us to see everything differently. Like a pair of glasses. When love is added to a list of 10 items you do not have 11, but infinity. You are able to see the 10 items you always had in a new light. In fact, it’s much like…

LOVE WINS [Daily Love Letter 6]

Beloved, In case you didn’t know I have a tattoo on my left wrist that says “LOVE WINS.” It’s the only tattoo I have and for years I said I’d never get a tattoo but if I ever get one then it’s going to be one that says “LOVE WINS.” I even have a LOVE WINS sticker on the laptop I’m writing this with. It was inspired by a sermon I heard years ago of the same title about the idea that Jesus chose love all the way until the end. Even when people insulted him, spat on him, tortured…

How Will They Know You? [Daily Love Letter 5]

Beloved, I want to share another one my favorite quotes for you, this time from Jesus in the Gospel of John: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” I LOVE that so much, because it really disrupts and flips our priorities. Just like I said in yesterday’s love letter if someone wants to know more about your faith they’re going to look at how you treat people, and how you actually live. We can go on and on about what we believe about God, the world and humanity, but it really doesn’t matter if…

The Only Thing That Counts [The Daily Love Letter 4]

Beloved, One of my favorite quotes is from the apostle Paul in Galatians where he says “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” That’s all that counts. What doesn’t count is our list of wins, our reputation, and everything that we fight so hard to be recognized for. Faith is best expressed through love, not through saying the right prayers, having the right theology, or being morally disciplined. Those kind of things seem to come as result of a faith expressing itself through love, not a prerequisite. Faith, just like love, is a matter of the…

The Four Loves [Daily Love Letter 3]

Beloved, Love is a difficult word to describe, especially in the English language. You can say you love tacos, you love your cousin, you love your spouse, and you love your life, and in all those statements you are talking about different kinds of love. The Greeks had four words for talking about love: Storge – enjoying someone for their familiarity, whether that’s family or old friends Philia – the strong and unbreakable bond between best friends Eros – sexual desire; the root word for erotic Agape – unconditional love; to love with no bounds, even without reciprocation We experience…

Wabi Sabi [Daily Love Letter 2]

Beloved, I’m a huge fan of words. I especially love words that don’t have easy definitions. One of those words is the Japanese word Wabi Sabi. It can’t easily be translated to English but it refers to the value and beauty of all things that are imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It’s even a popular aesthetic in Japanese art. A Wabi Sabi art piece would present a vase but highlight the crack in the vase — or perhaps even fill in the crack with gold. I see this as a beautiful analogy for how we can see each other. We’re all…

The First Love Letter

Beloved, There is nothing more important in this life than living in love. I’m not talking about romantic love. I’m talking about something bigger than that. I’m talking about what you feel when a child is born, what you feel when your friend forgives you, what you feel when you find your calling, what you feel when you decide life is worth living. I’m a Christian so I take Jesus seriously, especially when he says the most important commandment is to love God, and to love your neighbor as yourself. So the whole thing is about love. Yet when we…
