In case you didn’t know I have a tattoo on my left wrist that says “LOVE WINS.” It’s the only tattoo I have and for years I said I’d never get a tattoo but if I ever get one then it’s going to be one that says “LOVE WINS.” I even have a LOVE WINS sticker on the laptop I’m writing this with.
It was inspired by a sermon I heard years ago of the same title about the idea that Jesus chose love all the way until the end. Even when people insulted him, spat on him, tortured him, and killed him he hung on the Cross saying “Forgive them for they don’t know what they’re doing.” Not once does he choose revenge, which I think we would all say would be totally justified.
My biggest image of grace is in the Gospel of John’s telling of Jesus meeting his disciples after he comes back from the dead. They all told Jesus they would stick by his side and even die with him if they had to. Then the moment Jesus is arrested they all abandoned him. If any of us were in the shoes of Jesus the very least we would do is tell them all off the moment we saw our wayward friends again. However, Jesus doesn’t even mention it. Instead he asks them if they’re hungry and barbecues some fish for them. Jesus responds with love, instead of revenge.
And that’s how movements start; by choosing love again, and again, and again. And in the end we realize it is only love that wins.
