Hate is Too Easy

Hate is too easy. We are aware of this at a deep level and we may even preach it, but it is a lot more difficult to live it out. Many of us react with anger and fear, which is absolutely natural and necessary. The problem is when we let ourselves stay there. We don’t let ourselves be moved to compassion. Compassion is the difficult work but it’s the necessary work. We get caught up in an endless cycle of violence when we don’t let ourselves move past anger to compassion. I love this quote from Leo Tolstoy: “Give good…

Christians Should Care About Our Planet THE MOST

I’ve come to a point where it seriously makes no sense to me to be a Christian and not care about the sustainability of our planet. Those who think that this whole Earth comes from a divine source should care the most about taking good care of it. Right? How did Christians ever get associated with people in the way of restoring our planet? It’s beyond me. There was a glimmer of hope when I saw Pope Francis give Donald Trump some documents he wrote up on Climate Change and caring for the planet from a Christian perspective. It was from his Encyclical from…

Trying to Love

I’ve been thinking a lot about love more recently. Love is always something I have to remind myself to do. I wish it were more natural for me than to react with fear or anger. I have to admit it has become a more natural response than it was for me years ago, but it’s definitely a very slow process. I have the words “LOVE WINS” tattooed on my wrist to remind myself to love. It’s the only tattoo I have and it’s upside down facing me so I can look down and read it when I need a reminder.…

I Can’t Believe It’s Not Jesus [Human Jesus]

In the ‘Human Jesus’ series we take a look at the week’s gospel reading from the Revised Common Lectionary and discuss the humanity of Jesus. This week’s Gospel Reading is John 3:1-17 Here we get probably the most famous verse in the whole Bible: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Today, I want to focus on that word ‘believe’ in there. Unfortunately, in today’s world Christianity tends to be all about what a person intellectually believes. It’s as if the signs…

The Day After International Women’s Day

What does the day after International Women’s Day look like? Many holidays or days of remembrance reveal those who celebrate just to be in fashion — from racists to posting MLK quotes on his birthday, to people who hardly ever talk to their mom anymore posting a selfie with their mom, talking about how much they love them. Call your mom, dude.  For those who claimed to value equality and respect for the female gender yesterday, work to keep those values for the rest of the year too. And start with the women in your life. It’s more difficult to…

Temptation of the Temporary [Human Jesus]

In the ‘Human Jesus’ series we take a look at the week’s gospel reading from the Revised Common Lectionary and discuss the humanity of Jesus. This week’s Gospel Reading is Matthew 4:1-11 This passage gives us one of the most common examples to show how Jesus was not only fully divine, but also fully human just like us. As Hebrews 4:15 says “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet he did not sin.” In this story Jesus…

LET’S GET HOLY

The first mention of the word ‘holy’ in the Scriptures is in Genesis 2:3: “Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.” This is our first clue to what the word “holy” truly means. It’s in reference to a day set apart as distinct from the other days. After all, holy really means ‘set apart’. So to understand holiness get rid of the hierarchical associations like “better than”, “cleaner than”, “fluffier than”, etc. Instead associate with distinction. For something to be holy it must…

Here We Grow

I believe the calling God has called my life to this year of 2017 is a growth of influence. Recently I’ve been speaking in more contexts, making awesome connections, and also creating more videos. I’ve always loved making videos. Recently I started a series called Newspaper Liturgy, where I look at the news of that week and talk about the spiritual significance of it. I’ve also started putting out weekly documentary-type vlogs of my week. Those have been fun to film and edit. I just really love creating and putting stuff out. Nowadays when a friend says “Hey I saw…

Best job ever

For those that don’t know I am on staff at my church as the Director of Student Ministries and I lead a youth group every Wednesday and a young adults group every Friday. I got to go with our youth group to Winter Camp up in Big Bear at Camp Cedar Crest this last weekend. We had a blast! I love working with youth for so many reasons. One is that they always are guaranteed to make me laugh harder than anyone — especially at camp! These youth blow my mind with all the places their minds go. Another awesome…
