The Gospel According to Warm Bodies: Grace for Zombies

Last weekend I finally saw the film, Warm Bodies. (Watch the trailer if you have not seen it.) It was interesting. Some of the people I went with loved it and some hated it but I’m pretty sure I got more out of it than anyone as I walked out wondering how I can be a better messenger of grace. Let me explain: In the film there is a closed off community of humans surrounded by walls to keep the zombies out. Their leader, Grigio tells them that even if they look human, they are not. People in the community…

Music and Solidarity

Christmas seems to be the most stressful time of the year but also the most peaceful time of the year. The last couple weeks have been very busy and stressful and the friends from home that I’ve started losing contact with can probably tell. Last Thursday night was filled with a lot of running around, giving short answers, ignoring text messages, worrying about deadlines and bloodshot eyes. At one point in the night my church was having a rehearsal for our annual Christmas night where various members of the church performed whatever they liked. I decided to pause at one…

A Poem For Equality and Women Like Junia

(Preface: Junia is the first and only woman apostle mentioned in the Bible. She is mentioned only in Romans 16:7, “Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles and they were in Christ before I was.” However, back in the 13th or early 14th century Junia got a sex change in the translation of the Bible. Since it was thought by then that it is impossible for a woman to be an apostle they assumed that she must have been a man. So they changed her name to…

My Crack at Proverbs 31 and Expectation-Oppression

Growing up in church meant growing up in youth group and for years the leaders of the youth group would sarcastically but consistently tell the boys before the service started to not be all over the girls and for the girls to stay away from the guys because we’ll just break their heart. The sarcastic comments were followed by laughter of course…by the ones who said them. It was funny at times but most of the time me and my friends would look at each other rolling our eyes with full knowledge of some of the scandalous heartbreaking girls a…

To All Favorable and Unfavorable Women

There’s a story in the interesting, disturbing, liberating, confusing, beautiful, challenging Bible about a girl who was told she would give birth to the Messiah. Some Christians like to hold her on a pedestal as this perfect mythical woman but believe it or not she was actually human. in reading about her she seems to be a woman who thought similar thoughts to some women I know today. In the gospel of Luke we’re introduced to Mary when an angel appears to her to tell her of what is to come. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman!…

Imperfect Prayers

One of the most impacting moments of my Christian life happened when I was very young in a family praying circle. We were all holding hands with everyone’s heads bowed and eyes closed. My left hand was being held by my older brother who sometimes squeezed it to try to get me to make a noise during the seriousness of the prayer. This wasn’t one of those times. My brother was praying as well. My dad was praying the most as he usually did; he is still the longest prayer I know. As my dad was praying I decided to open my…

Stop Using “Gay” To Mean “Lesser”

This is a screenshot taken at 4:57 PM of a live feed on nohomophobes.com of how many tweets have been sent just today using these four terms. When I found this website my heart was broken. As a Christian I could easily say “People out there are really messed up” and then just leave it at that but the fact is I’ve heard several of my Christian friends use these hurtful words in casual conversation. As a Christian I would like to apologize to anyone who has ever been hurt by a Christian who doesn’t think before they speak. I…

Risking the Meet-Cute

Lately I’ve been thinking, re-thinking and especially over thinking the idea of “that special someone” I’ve heard theories about. There are currently over seven billion people on this planet and many of us are in search of one. TV and movies tell us that if another human being catches your eye then to go over and chase that person and make it happen before you lose the opportunity. It teaches us a heavy “life is what you make it” message. They tell you to hurry up or else you’ll always be wondering what could have been with that person. However,…

My Dream of “Heaven”?

A month ago I began questioning heaven and hell. I wondered about the questions, “Why would a loving God send so many people to hell for eternity?” and “What if God’s love is so big that he lets us choose between heaven and hell even after we die?” God’s mercy endures forever. That means forever. This deeply troubled me when thinking about people going to hell. I began leaning on the other side of things. I was ready to believe God’s love really is so big that that he lets us choose between heaven and hell even after we die.…

Evolving From a House-Of-Cards Like Faith

Eight months ago I began a journey of finding my own faith. I decided to forget everything I had been taught about the bible and this Jesus figure and discover the truth for myself. Since then I have been on a journey of finding things that Christians have seem to forgotten and things that Christians have simply made up. In doing this I have learned to approach faith with an open mind and an open heart. There are a lot of things we don’t know and our perspectives are always limited. I learned to test and question things the way…
